Intro to setting up your deskphone
==================================

Sometimes called an internet phone (IP), VoIP Phone, or broadband phone, a deskphone is a standalone, internet-ready device that uses [Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)](https://www.ringcentral.com/office/features/voip/overview.html "") to make and receive calls.

Before you can use a deskphone with <var class="keyword">
<div style="display: inline;">

</div></var>, you'll need to complete the setup, or provisioning, process. This will allow your deskphone to connect to <var class="keyword">
<div style="display: inline;">
RingCentral
</div></var>'s servers so you can use it for secure calling, audio conferencing, and online meetings.

There are three ways to connect your deskphone to <var class="keyword">
<div style="display: inline;">
RingCentral
</div></var>'s servers:

* **[Automated Setup](#automated-set-up "")** : Deskphones purchased directly from <var class="keyword">

  RingCentral
  </div></var> are ready for use and connect automatically.
* **[Assisted Setup](#assisted-set-up "")** : Deskphones that you already own or have purchased from a third-party vendor must be set up to connect to <var class="keyword">
  <div style="display: inline;">

  </div></var>. This option is known as Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). See the [complete list of third-party deskphones](https://support.ringcentral.com/article-v2/certified-supported-deskphones-ringcentral.html?brand=RingCentral&product=RingEX&language=en_US "") that are compatible with <var class="keyword">

* **[Manual Setup](#manual-setup "")** : If your deskphones aren't certified and supported by <var class="keyword">

* **Make sure the deskphone is unlocked**. You can contact its manufacturer to verify how to unlock it or learn whether it's unlocked.

  <div style="display: inline;">
  RingCentral
  </div></var> admin access** . If you aren't sure:
  * Go to the [<var class="keyword">

Automated setup
---------------

Many deskphones support an automated setup process called Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP). Deskphones that support ZTP can be set up, updated, and managed automatically following a full factory reset of the device.

Before you use automated setup:

* Perform a factory reset of your deskphone.
* If you're using a deskphone that you used with a different provider, and it was connected to that provider using ZTP, you may need to contact your previous provider or device manufacturer so they can remove your device from their system.
  * For most phones, you'll need to request that your previous provider delete your phone's MAC address from their servers.
  * For Poly phones, email Poly's ZTP support ([ztpnotify@hp.com](mailto:ztpnotify@hp.com "")) to request a transfer of the device's MAC address to <var class="keyword">
    <div style="display: inline;">
    RingCentral
    </div></var>. To bypass the ZTP process for Poly phones, you can use assisted setup.
  * For Snom phones, raise a support case on their [website](https://helpdesk.snom.com/ "") providing the MAC address and proof of purchase.

Assisted setup
--------------

Assisted setup is available for most deskphones that <var class="keyword">
<div style="display: inline;">
RingCentral
</div></var> sells and supports. The general steps are:

* [Locate your deskphone's serial number](https://support.ringcentral.com/article-v2/Desk-Phone-How-to-find-Serial-Number-RingCentral.html?brand=RC_US&product=RingEX&language=en_US ""). Serial numbers, sometimes called *MAC addresses*, are often located on stickers on the bottom of devices. If you can't locate the serial number, contact the manufacturer.
* Enter your deskphone's serial number into the [<var class="keyword">
  <div style="display: inline;">
  Admin Portal
  </div></var>](https://service.ringcentral.com "").
* Enter <var class="keyword">
  <div style="display: inline;">
  RingCentral
  </div></var>'s provisioning server address into your deskphone's menu.
* Follow the on-screen instructions to finalize your phone's setup. You can copy the instructions to your clipboard so they're easy to access.

The assisted provisioning process will be similar for each of the phone manufacturers. Learn more about [assisted setup for deskphones](https://support.ringcentral.com/article-v2/Assisted-setup-for-deskphones.html?brand=RingCentral&product=RingEX&language=en_US "").

Once you've completed assisted setup, your deskphone will connect automatically to <var class="keyword">
<div style="display: inline;">
RingCentral
</div></var>'s servers. Updates and new features will be downloaded to it automatically.

Manual setup
------------

If your deskphone doesn't support assisted setup, you can use manual setup. To do this, [find and enter your Session Initiated Protocol (SIP) settings](https://support.ringcentral.com/article-v2/Manual-Provisioning-How-get-SIP-Settings.html?brand=RC_US&product=RingEX&language=en_US "").

Manual provisioning has some limitations. Manually provisioned devices:

* Can't receive automatic updates from <var class="keyword">
  <div style="display: inline;">
  RingCentral
  </div></var>'s servers
* Can't receive<var class="keyword">
  <div style="display: inline;">
  RingCentral
  </div></var> firmware updates
* Can't use [<var class="keyword">
  <div style="display: inline;">
  RingCentral
  </div></var>'s Presence feature](https://support.ringcentral.com/article-v2/Presence-Overview.html?brand=RC_US&product=RingEX&language=en_US "")
* Don't have softkeys for [Paging](https://support.ringcentral.com/article-v2/Paging-Overview.html?brand=RingCentral&product=RingEX&language=en_US "") or [Intercom](https://support.ringcentral.com/article-v2/4603.html?brand=RingCentral&product=RingEX&language=en_US "") features
