Permissions define the access and level of control that admins and users have over features and settings in their apps, the Admin Portal, and other devices. User roles define these permissions. Some accounts use [predefined roles](https://support.ringcentral.com/article-v2/10638-user-roles-permissions-predefined-roles.html?brand=RingCentral&product=RingEX&language=en_US "") with set permissions, while others can create custom roles to tailor access as needed.

Admins can grant permissions to allow users access to certain products or manage specific features as needed.

You may want to modify permissions if, for example:

* A user needs to access or modify user information for other users but not for their own rules or settings.
* A user needs to view the users list without being able to modify the other users' settings.
* A user needs access to view certain reports, but not make any modifications.

To access permissions:

* Sign in to the [<var class="keyword">

* Click the **Users** tab.
* In the left panel, click **Roles**.
* Click a role name to view what permissions are available.

Some permissions depend on other permissions, and can't be disabled until those other permissions are turned off first.

Other permissions operate independently.

General
-------

* **Overview**: Provides quick access to call extension settings, recent voicemails and faxes, and recent call log activity.
* **Messages**: Provides the ability to view, update status, and delete messages.
* **Contacts**: Provides the ability to read, add, edit, and delete personal contacts.
* **Standard User Tools**: Provides access to various downloadable tools and apps.

Policies
--------

* **Domestic Calls**: Allows calls to/from long-distance and/or out-of-state numbers.
* **Internal Calls** : Allows extension-to-extension calling and calls to/from toll-free numbers.
* **Premium destinations**: Lets users access premium call numbers.
* **Unmasked Numbers** : Lets admins view the full details of other users' external calls in the *Call Log* , *SMS Log*, and *Analytics* sections.
  * Uncheck this permission to enable number masking (show as Unknown).
* **View Location Data**: Give access to see the location data of the user.
* **Voicemail**: Lets callers leave voicemail messages on an extension.

User settings
-------------

* **Accept Queue Calls Control** : Provides the ability for users to turn the*Accept calls from a call queue* setting on or off.
* **Call Blocking**: Turns on/off the ability for a user to block calls.
* **Call Handling**: Lets users set up call handling rules for work and after hours.
* **Notifications** : Manages users' [activity notifications](https://support.ringcentral.com/article-v2/configuring-notifications-sounds-admin-portal.html?brand=RC_US&product=RingEX&language=en_US "").
* **Outbound Caller ID** : Manages [caller ID for outbound calls](https://support.ringcentral.com/article-v2/setting-up-caller-id-admin-portal.html?brand=RingCentral&product=RingEX&language=en_US "").
* **Outbound Fax Settings** : Manages [fax cover page settings](https://support.ringcentral.com/article-v2/Setting-up-outbound-fax-settings.html?brand=RingCentral&product=RingEX&language=en_US "").
* **Phones \& Numbers** : Manages settings associated with assigned numbers and devices.
  * **Numbers**: Add, edit, and remove direct virtual numbers.

* **User Fax Control**: Turns on/off a user's ability to use the fax feature.
* **User Info**: Manages user details such as extension number, name, password, security question, contact details, and time zone.

Company settings
----------------

* **Account Administration**: Allows access to advanced company-level features and tools, including session timeouts, directory integration, single sign-on, service status link, and message store configuration.
* **Account Fax Control**: Turns on/off access to fax features at the account level.
* **Account federation management** : Lets admins provision, manage, and search across multiple <var class="keyword">

  </div></var> account instances in a company.
* **Appearance**: Provides the ability to configure service site appearance (set a logo).
* **Company Info** : Users can manage the [company address and caller name (CNAM)](https://support.ringcentral.com/article-v2/Company-Numbers-Overview.html?brand=RC_US&product=RingEX&language=en_US "") displayed to call recipients.
* **Extension Numbering**: Gives access to change how extensions are numbered.

Multi-sites

Phone system
------------

* **Auto Receptionist**: Configures how calls to the company number are handled. Lets users play a greeting, or route the call to an extension.

* **Company Numbers**: Lists the different phone numbers registered in the company account. Allows the porting of numbers from other service providers.
