Engage Voice | Using the Say Var node

The Say Var node uses an automated voice to repeat variables to callers. The types of variables you can choose from include individual digits, dates, numeric values, and individual letters.

There is also an option for text-to-speech, which allows you to enter words, phrases, or even sentences that the automated voice will repeat back to the caller. Keep in mind that extra charges may apply if you enable text-to-speech.

Finally, the Say Var node also has options for including audio files that play before or after the automated voice.

The Say Var node is particularly useful for confirming input from callers. For example, if you have a Get Input node that asks callers to enter a zip code, you can use the Say Var node to repeat back the zip codes.

Say Var properties

  • Node Id: This is the unique name given to a particular Say Var node that has been placed on the background. You can leave the default name or change it
  • Type: This is where you choose the type of input you want the Say Var node to repeat. Options include the following:
    • sayDigits: Select this type if you want the IVR to repeat individual digits from 0 to 9 in a sequence. This might be useful, for example, if you want to supply callers with a phone number or extension. If you choose this option, simply list the numbers one after another in the Say Value field. There’s no need for punctuation or spacing
    • sayDate: Select this option if you want the Say Var node to repeat a date. If you choose this option, keep in mind you must enter the date according to the required format: YYYY/MM/DD
    • sayNumber: This option is different from sayDigits. Instead of repeating individual digits, the IVR is able to repeat whole numeric values. For example, if you choose this option and supply ‘100,’ the IVR will state it as ‘one hundred’ rather than ‘one, zero, zero’
    • sayAlpha: This option allows you to supply letters that the IVR will repeat individually. You do not need to include spaces or punctuation
    • Text-to-Speech: Choose this option if you want the IVR to repeat a word, phrase, or sentence (extra charges may apply)
  • Intro Audio: Use this field to select audio recordings that will play before the Say Var node repeats the variables you’ve configured
  • Say Value: Use this field to supply the variables you want the Say Var node to repeat. Keep in mind you must be careful only to include variables that correspond to the input type you choose in the Type field (this is a required field)
  • Closing Audio: Use this field to select audio recordings that will play after the Say Var node repeats the variables you’ve configured it to say

Helpful hint!

You can also use the Say Var node if you want to repeat data supplied by callers in an earlier node –– for example, data collected by a Get Input node. In the Say Value field, enter the dollar symbol ($) followed by the name of the Get Input node. The name of the Get Input node is whatever you have entered in the Node Id field in the Get Input Properties modal window.
