Using Settings for custom IP Mapping

Last updated on December 23, 2021

Table of contents

Settings in Analytics lets you use the default Maxmind IP address mapping or set custom IP mapping to use when filtering in Quality of Service and Rooms and Devices dashboards. Location as a target in Alerts will also be updated to reflect the changes. Note that this is an account-level setting. The changes you make here affect the rest of the analytics account. Delete all location-based alerts before changing the IP mapping type.

Choosing your mapping type

  1. From the left-hand navigation bar, go to the Settings gear icon.
  2. In Choose Type of Mapping, select:
    1. System Default IP Address Mapping (Maxmind): This option means the mapping methodology does not change from what the Analytics portal has been offering.
      OR
    2. Upload Your IP Mapping File: This option lets you provide customized mapping data for use in the Quality of Service and Rooms & Devices dashboards, and location as target in Alerts.
  3. If you choose to upload your own IP mapping, you can click Download Template for a spreadsheet that you can fill in and upload. If you prefer to upload your own mapping document, the file:
  • Must be in CSV format
  • Must be comma delimited
  • Must contain information in all fields, except for City and State, which are optional
  • IP addresses properly formatted
  • Must have one public IP address and a range of private IP addresses in every row.
  • If a Public IP address occurs in more than one row then the Private IP address ranges must not overlap.
  • The following symbols aren’t allowed in the file: < > ” /
  • City, State, Country, and Location fields have 100 character count limit.
  • Multiple rows in the mapping can share the same Location label if they share the same City, State, and Country entries.
For additional guidance, enable the Show Samples slider to see sample data, or, click Quick Tips in the upper right corner for tips to help you get set up.
Upload your IP mapping file

Uploading your IP Mapping file

You can create a custom mapping file by downloading the template or modifying the existing file. Click Download Template in the upper left of the Upload Your IP Mapping File panel for a blank spreadsheet. To modify the existing mapping file, click Download in the navigation bar for a spreadsheet that is pre-filled with the existing data. When you are ready to upload the customized file, first delete the existing file by clicking Delete. You can then upload your modified, saved file. Click Save for your changes to take effect.
The Settings dashboard.
When you’ve saved your changes, the new mapping data will be available in the Quality of Service dashboards and Rooms & Devices dashboards that offer Locations as a filtering option. You will also be able to use the new mapping data when setting Alerts when the alert trigger target is Locations.

View Logs

You can use Settings Log to see a history of IP address mapping changes. Click View Logs on the far right, next to Show Samples, to open the Settings Log page. Use the Search User field to find a specific user by entering a name. Use the Date Range field to filter by date.

Results display in the table, showing:
  • Timestamp
  • User
  • Original Option: most recent mapping setting, whether Maxmind or customized
  • New Option: the updated mapping setting
  • Mapping Change: shows the new mapping file name
All columns are sortable.
