Engage Digital | Creating an insight

There are two essential elements in creating an insight in Analytical Designer: measures and attributes. As discussed in Components of Analytical Designer, measures are computational expressions of numerical or quantitative data, while attributes are non-measurable descriptors used to break down metrics and measures. Attributes represent qualitative data.

There are a variety of combinations you can work with to create different insight types. However, there are insight types that won’t display some combinations of measures and attributes.

For instance, you might want to find out what time of day queues are peaking. You can drag the measure Queue Duration, specifying the measure as an average, and the attribute Start Hour to create a line graph. In this case, you might see that average queue duration dramatically increases at 10am, dips during lunch hour, and then increases again at around 3pm.
Example of creating an insight
The combination of data in this example would not display if you selected, say, a pie graph insight type.

Creating an insight

Creating an insight is very intuitive. Analytical Designer is dynamic and every movement you make may or may not change the visualized data. You need to be careful in creating an insight because making tiny changes to some settings or dragging new measures or attributes to sections can drastically change the way your insight looks.

If you make a mistake, you can always use the undo and redo buttons that can be found at the right side of the title bar. Note that the instructions below are only for creating an insight from scratch, and not for editing or opening an existing insight.

When you are ready to create an insight from scratch, follow these steps:
1. Click on Analytics in the main menu.
2. Navigate to Analytical Designer via the left-hand navigation bar.
3. The default insight type is a column chart. Decide what insight type you need and click on its icon on the insight type switcher.
4. Drag a measure or an attribute from the data catalog and drop it to a section or to the Get Started space on the insight canvas.
5. Drag another measure or another attribute from the data catalog and drop it to a section. You can drag as many measures and attributes as you need for the insight you want.
6. Drag an attribute or the date data to the filter section to the right of the insight type switcher if you want to add filters.
7. Customize configurations of insight type if needed.
8. Give your insight a title in the title bar.
9. Click Save on the upper right corner at the title bar.
Once saved, you can now add your insight to a dashboard. To add an insight to a dashboard, head on to Adding a saved insight.
